Welcome to Blogging 101
Possessing a solid grasp of blogging vocabulary is imperative for beginning bloggers. To understand blogs, you need to know the simple terms such as blog, platform, domain, and web host.
Once you have mastered these key elements of blogging, you can enter any conversation about blogging with confidence.
Blog is short for weblog, which simply means a series of online posts presented in reverse chronological order. That’s all!
Nevertheless, new technologies that appear every day redefine what a blog is, what a blog can be, and what a blog should do. For many years, blogs were defined as text-based websites that kept records of days, similar to a captain’s log on a sailing ship.
However, this started to change as the group of people who kept blogs became more diverse. The more bloggers began to explore the limits of the medium and of the technology that made it possible, the more the boundaries of what could be called a “blog” expanded.
Today, there are an abundance of photo blogs, and there are even video blogs as well. Mobile blogging devices may well change the definition of blogging entirely by making it possible for bloggers to create new kinds of posts.
Prerequisites
The rest of blogging 101 has to do with the technical side of things. If you are setting up a blog, you will need a platform, a web host, and a domain.
A blogging platform is a computer software program that allows you to write posts and to update your blog. Your platform is also what you use to design the look of your blog, from the color scheme to font size.
The web host is sort of like the virtual file cabinet where your blog is stored. Your computer communicates with the host when you upload or edit a post.
The domain is the online address of your blog, and usually ends in ‘dot com’.
Between all of these different forces that are constantly expanding and reshaping the blogosphere, it is difficult to imagine that the definition of what is and is not a blog will ever remain fixed for very long.
Now that you know what a blog is, what a platform is, and what domains and hosts are, congratulate yourself! You have just passed blogging 101.
You Are Here
Some people waste years, decades, even their entire lives waiting for that extraordinary lightning bolt that will change everything for them. But those whose lives really do change in dramatic ways can almost always trace the change back to something much simpler.
One subtle, unsuspecting moment. One episode, one realization, one action. One seemingly insignificant step that put them on a completely different path… and ultimately led them to their dreams.
Good friend, it’s never too late to change your life!
Blogging can be a great way to share your opinion while making money. It’s also very accessible, as anyone who has an internet connection will be able to get started. Despite this, many people will be unsure about how to start a blog in 2020.
Thankfully, this process doesn’t need to be difficult or confusing. As we’ll see, there are a few simple steps that you need to take, to set yourself up for long-term profits in the blogging industry. Let’s look at some of the best ways to start a money-making blog.
Can You Really Make Money Blogging?
Let’s start by looking at one of the most commonly asked questions when considering starting a blog. Can you really make money blogging? The answer is a definitive yes.
As we’ll discuss later, there are dozens of ways that you can monetize your blog, so you’ll be earning money from the traffic that you’re attracting. The amount you’ll make will vary. For some people, it could be a few thousand dollars a month. However, some bloggers use their sites to make millions. For example, the Huffington Post was the highest-paid blogging site in 2019. It’s estimated that they were able to make around $41 million.
It should also be noted that the blogging industry has a bright future. As people start to spend more time online, these sites are poised to capitalize on a surge in traffic. According to some estimates, digital consumption of content could double in the coming year. Based on these facts, this is the perfect time for you to launch your blog. But how to start a blog in 2020?
Find Your Niche
The first thing that you need to do is discover your niche. This is the key to make money blogging. There are dozens of big blogging sites online. They have a lot of resources dedicated to SEO and marketing. Because of this, ranking against them can be very difficult.
Instead, you want to focus on taking on a smaller niche, which you will be able to control, getting better ranking in the search results. This will also ensure that you’ll be able to tap into a dedicated audience, which will be more likely to purchase your products.
There are a few ways that you can decide which niche is right for you. However, the most important consideration is how passionate you are about the topic. When you’re just getting started, it will take a while before you get traction and start making money. During the first few months, you’ll need to rely on passion about the topic to carry you forward.
Once you’ve got a list of a few potential niche blog ideas, you can start doing your research. You want to try to find an area that doesn’t have a lot of competition. Don’t be afraid if there are only a few sites. As long as it’s not overly crowded, your blog will be able to slot in successfully.
Reach Your Target Market
It’s important that you first consider your target customers before proceeding with the series of content that you would like to post. More than likely, it will be your products that determine the demographic profile of your customers.
Before conceptualizing the theme of your blog, it would be better if you developed your avatar – a definite profile of your ideal customer. This profile will represent your target market segment. The basic demographic profile and categories under each profile are as follows:
- Age. Does your target market consist of children, teenagers, adults, or senior citizens?
- Gender. Are your target customers male, female, or transgender?
- Economic Status. Do they belong in low income, middle income, affluent, or rich group?
- Location or address.
These profiles or sets of traits should match the characteristics or features of the products or services that you intend to offer. Remember, however, that these classifications are still relatively broad and apply only to basic commodities where product differentiation by consumers is still not so distinct. Examples are medicines or medical services, foods, educational services, and others.
Market Segmentation
For stricter market segmentation, you can differentiate your target markets or narrow them further according to customer temperaments, needs, goals, and fears. Specifically, you can distinguish them according to:
- Needs – sense of accomplishments, sense of belonging, self-actualization
- Goals – productivity, efficiency, savings, safety
- Temperaments – serious, happy go lucky, complacent
- Fears – old age, poverty, ill health, rejection
There are still more categories to further narrow your market segment such as educational attainment, lifestyle, mindset, family size, political views, etc. These are relevant if the products or services that you are offering are highly specialized or customized such as travel or vacation packages, luxury cars, high tech gadgets, and other.
Having a clear picture of the common characteristics of your target market when blogging will help you decide what theme or blog design to use, the appropriate mode or tone of your article, and the right web graphics that you need to employ.
These details may overwhelm you at first. But you should realize that your purpose for blogging is to attract web users who are more likely to use your products or services and to influence them to buy and patronize what you offer.
Bear in mind as well that customers now are more discriminating, especially if the products are quite expensive. They scrutinize details and compare them with competing brands.
So, to make your blog more effective, create a profile of your target market based on your products’ characteristics and features. Then, post blog content that will appeal to your target market. Remember, your blog was created to generate sales. Keep your focus so you will not waste time and effort when blogging.
Set up Your Website
The next thing that you need to do is get your site online. Now here is the fun (and sometimes the most difficult) part of starting a blog. Yep, this is where most beginners will start to struggle. However, this doesn’t need to be the case.
The first thing that you’ll need to pick will be your domain name. This is the URL that people will type in to search for your blog. If possible, you want to choose something that will be catchy, so that your audience will be able to remember it.
You can select the name of your domain and type it in the domain bar. But what do you do if the name of your domain is not showing in the bar? Or what if the name is not available?
This guide will also help you to choose the right name for your blog. There are three possible ways to name the domain. Following are the basic methods:
- Name the audience: It is an easy way to name the domain. The name of the domain could be a way to call out the audience. For example, smartblogger.com, problogger.com, or startamomblog.com could be some of the names related to the name of the audience.
- Name of the topic: If your blog is talking about one single topic, you can name the domain of your blog according to this. The domain name must be in concise language to engage the trust and the interest of the audience. For example, artofmanliness.com, thecleanupqueens.com, bloggingyourpassion.com, etc.
- Name the benefit: You can also name the blog related to the benefits for which your website is working out. You can make the audience clear, with the name of the domain of the blog. Hence, in this case, one can get complete information about the blog for which it stands out. For example, funntripps.com, beabetterblogger.com, makealivingwriting.com, etc.
Purchase A Web Hosting Plan
Once you’ve got the domain name, you’ll need to start looking for a place to host your site. You are already familiar with the term web hosting, which acts as a warehouse for the websites on the internet.
Web hosting is a feature that handles the visitors that are visiting your site and web content. Additionally, web hosting is available to back up your website.
There are dozens of different options for you to consider, each with different features and prices. Because of this, it’s recommended that you look through each option carefully, to find the one that works best for you.
While there are many different package options, many people opt to go with SiteGround. They have a range of features that make them more accessible to people, especially if you’re just starting your blogging journey.
For example, they have several different tiers, so as your blog grows, you’ll be able to upgrade your package.
You can buy any of the web hosting plans according to your choice and which suits you the best. One thing here you need to keep in mind is how much space you need.
When it comes to the gaming and technology niche the resolution of HD images used is higher. There are videos as well so the plan varies. It all depends on your niche by which you can choose.
Blogging with WordPress
WordPress is one of the many options available to bloggers who are looking for free software online which makes it incredibly easy to publish their own blog. This software is easy to use, provides a variety of templates, and offers excellent support to bloggers.
There are many options available to bloggers such as Wix, Squarespace and. However, this article strongly nudges the beginning blogger to consider starting a blog with WordPress. Additionally, you are encouraged to conduct your own research to decide whether WordPress is right for you or whether you should seek out a different blog network.
Reasons to Choose WordPress
There are many great reasons to choose WordPress to start a blog. Some of these reasons include a great variety of templates, the ability to categorize and tag posts easily, features such as spell check, previews and autosave, the ability to post text, audio files and video files, a variety of privacy options and the ability to track statistical data related to the blog in addition to other great features.
Some of these features may be more important to some bloggers than others so deciding whether or not WordPress is right for you will largely be a matter of personal preference. For example, bloggers with little or no programming experience may enjoy the myriad of templates available on WordPress while bloggers who are concerned about privacy issues may be more interested in the privacy options available through WordPress.
Carefully investigating these features will help bloggers determine if they should start a blog with WordPress.
Starting a Blog with WordPress
Bloggers who opt to start a blog with WordPress will certainly not be disappointed by the amount of time it takes to start a blog. A blogger can literally start a blog with WordPress within minutes. This is tremendously important to bloggers who are eager to get started and do not want to deal with a long process to start a blog.
The only requirements for starting a blog are a valid email address and a username. The blogger enters this information into the signup page and receives a password almost instantly. Next the blogger simply has to check his email, follow the activation link provided and use the password provided and the process is complete. The blogger can start blogging immediately.
Support Offered by WordPress
For many first-time bloggers the type of support offered is very important. This is because first time bloggers may have quite a few questions about the process of starting a basic blog and once they establish a basic blog, they may have additional questions about using advanced features and customizing the blog.
WordPress offers a great deal of support for bloggers of all skill levels. The support offered by WordPress includes the ability to contact the support staff as well as the ability to receive support from other members through online forums.
Although the support staff is incredibly responsive some bloggers enjoy the ability to communicate with other bloggers in forums. This is because the forums are active 24 hours a day and bloggers can find support from peers at any time.
Install WordPress
Once you have selected the domain and purchased hosting, the next step is to set up with WordPress. Here the account setup wizard is very important. Here what you have to do is simply choose the option of starting a new website. Afterward, select WordPress as it is the software, which you want to install.
Now the next step is to create the required log in details to create the account on WordPress. WordPress requires the email of the admin, the user name, and the password. Keep it in mind that for security purposes do not use the admin as your user name. Because if you use the admin name as your user name, hackers can hack your website. The admin name gives them a chance to get all your data and content.
After that select the continue button to proceed further. Here in this step, you must read all the terms of service to accept all the terms and to complete the setup button.
After going through these steps, you will be ready to proceed further. Now you can use WordPress and can log in to the dashboard. Now the next logical question must be how to login to the WordPress dashboard.
To log in, access your most used web browser and then type the URL there that ends with the name of your domain. An example to log into your WordPress dashboard may look like this: yourdomain.com/wp-admin, www.yourdomain.com/admin, etc.
After that, you will be on the log in page of WordPress. Here you need to enter the username and the password, after that log in to your site.
Choosing A WordPress Theme (Blog Design)
The next step after logging in to your account is to design the theme of your WordPress. There are many different WordPress themes for you to choose from. So, it’s recommended that you take the time to browse through them.
Your WordPress design is most important since it attracts the attention of your audience and engages their interest. If your site looks modern and creative then you can develop a successful blog.
As you’re doing this, consider the type of content that you plan on making, so the theme highlights it. For example, for an uplifting blog, you may prefer to have a light, bright theme.
To generate passive income from your blog, you have to pay a lot of focus in engaging your readers to become regular traffic on your website.
The focus of yours is to make your website functional rather than beautiful. What you have to do is to always come back with the unique content. Choosing the theme of WordPress is very important, as it will reflect the design of your website. It indicates the way your website appears to the audience.
There are many available themes for website design. Many bloggers believe that Astra is the best theme to choose for the free WordPress theme. You can also choose Astra Pro, a premium WordPress theme with many rich features.
However, if you can’t find any themes that you like on the WordPress site, you might want to consider getting one from a third party. Many sites sell themes but, before you buy, make sure that you’re working with a reputable company.
How to Install the WordPress theme?
Once you’ve found the perfect theme for you, you’ll need to activate it by following the steps below:
- Select the Appearance option, found on the left side of the navigation bar;
- Then after that choose the option of themes.
- Here an option of add new would be available.
- From here, you can choose the theme of your choice to design the website.
- Two options would be present here, which include search themes and upload themes. You can also upload the theme from any of the available third parties.
Install WordPress Plugins
WordPress provides you with many facilities and features such as plugins. A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress
Generally, plugins add more features or functionality to your site. For example, you might want to get a plugin that will make it easier for people to share your content on social media.
There are a lot of plugins out there, and as a marketer you know that there’s too many to choose from. Some do the same thing, some may not work with other plugins
WordPress alone has a directory filled with thousands of plugins. However, there are no essential plugins. Instead, spend some time browsing through the many options to find the right ones for your site.
There are several categories present for WordPress plugins, which include:
- Performance plugins
- Security plugins
- Analytics
- WordPress Backup plugins
- Membership plugins
- SEO plugins
- Social sharing plugins
- Email list building plugins
These plugins provide you with unique features and facilities.
The good news is that, as the needs for your site change over time, you’ll be able to adjust the types of plugins that you’ll be using. Like themes, you’ll need to install and activate plugins before you’ll be able to start using them on your site.
7 Advanced Plugins to Catapult Traffic & Sales
The first plugin, Calculated Fields Form, is one of the easiest ways to create a tool on your website. Tools attract backlinks, visitors, search rankings, just like a Ubersuggest.
The next plugin I have for you is Title Experiments. It allows you to test click through rates of different title variations of your posts. Remember, eight out of 10 people will read your headline, but only two out of 10 will click through, and read the rest.
It’s all about your headline, so when you’re creating a blog post, try to come up with at least five variations, and start testing them.
The third plugin Gravity Forms helps you to source qualified leads for your business via a multiple-step form. Multiple-step form reduces friction and increases conversion rates usually by 10 plus percent. Gravity Forms allows you to build multi-step forms, polls, quizzes, and surveys.
The next plugin, WP Mail SMTP, is configured with SendGrid’s SMTP. If you’re selling anything through your WordPress site, you usually are sending out emails, and you’ll find that they’re going to the Promotions or Spam tabs. Using this plugin makes sure that your emails hit customer’s inboxes.
The fifth plugin, Yoast SEO, is pretty self-explanatory. It does everything that you need from markup to title tags, meta tags, to creating a site map for you that you submit to Google search console. It does most of the stuff you need.
Broken Link Checker monitors links on your entire website. This plugin detects broken links and missing images. It also prevents search engines from following broken links. You can then use this plugin to quickly edit, and fix the broken links, create a better user experience, and it should help with your rankings in the long run.
Another plugin that I’ve used is the RafflePress plugin. It allows you to host giveaways on your website, which boosts virality. Because you can do things like when you do a giveaway, you can get more votes through social voting. You can integrate social media sites, and the more people share it the more votes they get.
It also has email integration, so you can send out email blast, and encourage more people to enter in the contests, and giveaways. It also has tracking and retargeting, and all this stuff built into this one plugin.

Write Your First Post
Now let us proceed towards engaging and developing the interest of the readers. Next, you must upload your content to your blog. Once you’ve got everything set-up, you’ll be able to start publishing content.
As a blogger, the content you produce will be your most valuable resource, so you want to invest some time and effort to make sure that you get every article right before you post it.
Focus on original and creative content only. Use long-tail keywords so you can rank your blogs on the search engine as well.
You also need to keep in mind that this is not the ending. It’s the beginning of a new successful income stream that will make you the boss. As a blogger, it is important to know where to market yourself and you should certainly employ social media.
Where To Get Ideas For Content
One of the biggest areas that people struggle with knowing what to write. When in doubt, think about your niche. In most niches, there will be a few key areas that you’ll need to cover. For example, if you’re writing about cars, you’ll need to talk about how the engine works.
It can also help to look at what your competitors are talking about. The topics that worked well for them can also be good for you to discuss. Don’t just copy what they’ve written. Instead, go into more depth or provide a different take on the information.
Another way to decide what type of content you want to write is to analyze the type of keywords that people in your niche are searching for. Various online tools can help you do this, telling you the amount of traffic each search is receiving.
If people are looking for answers about a topic, it can provide a lucrative opportunity, particularly if you can claim the top search engine ranking. Because search trends change over time, it’s recommended that you check keywords every six months. This will ensure that you’re keeping on top of the latest trends.
Finally, you might want to start a notebook where you write any article ideas that you have. Often, these ideas can seem to come out of nowhere, so make sure that you’re keeping this notebook close at hand.
How To Get Ranked By Search Engines
If you want to make money blogging, you’ll need to find a way to take out the top spot in search engine rankings. There are a few different ways that you can do this. First, you want to make sure that you’re using keywords that people are searching for. Your keyword research will be able to help you do this.
You’ll also need to consider the length of the article. In most cases, the search engines will favor longer content. In most cases, you want to aim for at least 1,000 words. But, if you’re tackling a bigger topic, you can easily get at least 5,000 words of content.
Finally, you might want to add pictures to your post. This will make it easier for people to read, as you’ll have something to break up the text. There are a few different sites, like Unsplash, that offer copyright-free photos, which you can use in your posts. When naming the picture, include some keywords, which will make it easier for the search engines to identify and recommend your posts.
Promote Your Blog
Once you’ve spent the time and effort creating the articles, you’ll need to start attracting readers. The best way to do this is by promoting your blog. There are dozens of ways to do this.
First, you might want to create a social media account. This will allow you to spread your content around the world. Though you should explore multiple channels, focus on the places where your audience will be the most active. In some cases, you might need to do some research to help you find these sites. You should also include links on your site that will enable people to share the post with their friends and family.
You can also spread awareness of your blog through guest blogging. Sites like Medium and Quora are a great place to start. This will let people get familiar with you and your style of writing. They can also help you drive traffic back towards your blog.
Set up Your Email Provider
Now that your promotion is in full swing, you might want to get people to sign up for an email list. Yes, you need an email list. But that is not one of the first things you should focus on.
Spend some time learning how to blog before you think about adding an email to your site. There is enough to learn when you begin. Afterwards, every week, you can send your peeps a newsletter, informing them of the latest posts.
This can be a great way to drive regular traffic to your site. It can also deliver valuable information, telling you what information people are most interested in.
If you’re having problems getting people to sign up for your newsletter you might want to try giving them a free resource, like an e-book, to get their information.
There are a few tools that you can use to help you get people to sign up, and manage the email marketing campaigns. For example, MailerLite and ConvertKit tend to be popular options.
Now remember: you don’t want to be stressed trying to figure out email marketing at the same time you are trying to learn how to add images to your blog posts. So, when you are ready, you can Learn More about Email Marketing.
Blogging for Profit
Now that we know how to start a WordPress blog, we can turn to how you’ll be able to turn your content into a valuable resource – making you money. Like everything in the blogging world, there are a few different techniques that you might want to explore, depending on the type of niche you’re in.
You can make money through ads, affiliate marketing, consulting, coaching, courses, digital products — and so much more!
The sky is the limit when it comes to how to make money blogging.
Place Ads Onto Your Blog
One of the most obvious solutions is to place ads onto your blogs. As your post gets traffic, you’ll get paid. The more people view your post, the more money you’ll be making. To do this, you’ll need to sign up with an ad network, which will supply the advertisements.
If you’re considering taking this monetization route, you should be careful about where you place the ads. Don’t put them all over the site, as this can make it feel cheap and produce a slower loading speed. Instead, focus on putting them in the margins, or try spacing them between paragraphs as a way of breaking up the content.
Use Affiliate Marketing
One of the best ways to make money from blogging is through affiliate marketing. This method allows you to create links to products on sites. If people visit the site and purchase the product, you’ll receive a commission.
There are a few ways to set-up affiliate marketing, depending on the type of niche that you are targeting. If your niche requires specific equipment, you might want to review the most popular products, helping people find the right one for them, leaving an affiliate link for the recommended choices.
In other cases, you might want to work with brands to create sponsored content. This is where a brand will sponsor a post, in exchange for you giving them favorable coverage. The more traffic you get, the more you’ll be able to charge for these sponsored posts.
Create And Sell Your Own Products
In most niches, you’ll be able to create products that you can sell. There are a few common ways of doing this. First, you might want to write an e-book. This will let you give a very deep dive into the topic, giving your audience a lot more information about the topic.
In other cases, you might want to sell a course. This can include video tutorials, where you guide people through the process. It’s also possible for you to start a coaching program, giving people one-on-one support and advice.
It’s often best to have a range of products in the store. This will ensure that you can target a range of price points. For example, most e-books will be between $10 to $25. However, you might be able to sell a course for between $100 to $10,000.
Start A Podcast
Increasingly, people are turning to podcasts as a way to get new information in an entertaining way. As a result, many people will prefer to hear you cover topics in this format. This doesn’t need to be expensive. Thanks to modern technology, as long as you have a microphone and editing software, you’ll be able to start producing podcast episodes.
As your podcast grows more popular, you’ll be able to start contacting companies in your niche, selling advertising space. The more people that listen to the show, the more you’ll be able to charge for each advertising slot.
Offer To Guest Post
Finally, you might offer to guest post. As we mentioned, this can be a great way of growing your blog. But, as you become a more well-known voice, it can present a lucrative opportunity. Many sites will be willing to pay to have you write for them. This will give them a boost, as people will recognize your name and want to read more of your content.
Deciding how much to charge for a guest posting spot can be a very challenging decision. Like many other opportunities, the more traffic you are getting the more you will be able to charge. However, if you feel the platform might be able to introduce you to more people, you might want to drop the price.
